What are veneers?
Veneers are incredibly thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin material that are bonded directly to the front of the tooth to cover up any discoloration or damage and, although mostly used for cosmetic reasons, they can also be used to cover and protect the tooth following a root canal.
Veneers are an excellent alternative to crowns for a number of reasons, including-
The procedure is almost entirely painless and often doesn’t require the use of even a local anesthetic.
Takes a much more conservative approach to tooth repair, covering up any damage or staining without having to make any additional alterations to the existing teeth, whereas crowns require the remaining teeth to be permanently filed down.
Can quickly and easily restore the teeth to a natural, white look, without the risk of complications or side effects.
Can last for a lifetime if properly taken care of.
What is the typical procedure for veneers?
In most cases, veneers usually require two or three separate appointments with the dentist, depending on which type of material is being used. During your initial consultation appointment, you will sit down with Dr. Skopp to determine if veneers are your best option. He will then discuss your goals with you and come up with a comprehensive plan, detailing the exact method to be used and which type of material your veneers should be made of.
Porcelain is usually the most common type of material used, but these veneers will require an additional appointment, as first the dentist will need to make a mold of your teeth and send this off to a dental laboratory so the porcelain veneers can be made. However, if you’re using composite resin veneers, these can be done in one appointment, as this material is sculpted directly onto the teeth. In most cases, porcelain veneers will achieve a much more natural look, however they are also more costly.
When it’s time to put the veneers in place, Dr. Skopp will first lightly buff down the teeth, removing somewhere around a half of millimeter of material to allow the veneer to fit smoothly. In some cases local anesthetic may be necessary during this process, depending on how sensitive your teeth are and how much tooth material needs to be removed.
If using porcelain veneers, the dentist will then rest them on your teeth so that you can check the coloring. If you’re not happy with it, say something, as the coloring can only be changed up until the point that the veneers are cemented in place.
Once everything is ready, the teeth will then be cleansed with special chemicals. From there, the dentist will sculpt the new front with the composite resin, or else apply a special cement to the teeth and finally glue the porcelain veneers directly onto the existing teeth. In most cases, all that’s left is to come in for a quick follow-up appointment in a week or two, and then your new teeth will be ready to go and you can continue caring for them just as you would your natural teeth.
The overall look and feel of your veneers will depend in large part upon the skill of the dentist. So don’t take any risks with your teeth, and instead call us today to schedule an appointment to let Dr. Skopp give you the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
