What is cosmetic dentistry?
As you’d expect, cosmetic dentistry refers to those procedures used to restore a more natural, straight or whiter look to the teeth and mouth. Still, these procedures are not only done for purely cosmetic reasons, as they can also help to eliminate many common oral problems, such as issues chewing, pain, and to prevent further tooth decay or loss. Some of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures include-
Crowns
Bridges
Dental Implants
Teeth Whitening
Veneers
Bonding
Shortening, Lengthening, Contouring and Reshaping
Many of these procedures can be used to fix the same types of problems, so it’s recommended you call to set up an appointment to discuss all of your options with Dr. Skopp and decide which one is best for giving you back your smile.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are small caps that fit directly over your existing tooth and can be used for a number of reasons. For starters, if your tooth is chipped, cracked or otherwise broken, the crown can be fixed over the top to hide the damage and prevent the tooth from decaying. Otherwise crowns are also used in between a dental bridge or also over the top of dental implants. In most cases, it is necessary for the dentist to file down the remaining tooth so that the crown can fit smoothly over it.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are used for when there are one or more teeth missing. The bridge is basically a fake tooth or teeth that fit into the gap where the missing teeth were and are fixed in place to a crown on either side.
Dental Implants
Dental implants can be used as a more permanent way to fix crowns and replacement teeth, and consist of a titanium rod that is inserted directly into the jaw bone. This is then covered with the crowns or sometimes removable dentures.
Whitening
Teeth whitening is one of the more common cosmetic dentistry procedures, and basically involves bleaching the teeth with the help of a special light, so that the patient can achieve a brighter, whiter smile.
Veneers
In some cases, whitening simply isn’t effective, especially for badly discolored or stained teeth, and in these cases, veneers can be used to cover up the stains. Still, they can also be used to improve the shape of the teeth or to cover up minor cracks. These veneers are super thin pieces of porcelain or composite resin that are cemented directly onto the existing tooth after it’s been lightly buffed down.
Bonding
Bonding can be used to fill in gaps between teeth, minor chips and cracks or to again change their color. With this method, a tooth colored filling is simply used in the gaps or over the front of the teeth as needed. Although this is far from the most complicated or perfect procedure, the results still may last for years with proper care.
Teeth Reshaping
If your teeth are crooked, chipped or otherwise irregularly shaped, Dr. Skopp may be able to reshape and contour them to look more normal. In addition, sometimes the teeth may be shortened through this method, while lengthening the teeth requires the use of crowns.
These are just some of the examples of the type of cosmetic dentistry procedures that Dr. Skopp is skilled in. So, to find out all of your options and to see which is right for you, don’t hesitate to call us today.
